Summer with Science: Research Dissemination Days

ARTIS - Institute of Art History, in the context of the Summer with Science 2021 process, promoted by the FCT, obtained three research initiation grants, which were allocated to the projects HOSPITALIS - Hospital architecture in Portugal at the dawn of Modernity: identification, characterization and contextualization (PTDC/ART-HIS/30808/2017) (2) and to the MAGISTER II project, Prosopography of Masters in Portugal at the time of the Gothic and Renaissance periods (1).
Both projects correspond to ARTIS' strategic research areas and this initiative supports young researchers in the introduction of scientific research in Art History and Cultural Heritage.

The Mystery of the Pseudojoaninha in the Painting of Gregório Lopes (c. 1490 1550)

Discover the mystery of a probable signature of Gregório Lopes (c. 1490-1550), one of the most notable Portuguese painters of the Renaissance, who signed many of his works with a pseudo ladybird, who was mistakenly identified with a ladybird. In this lecture, Prof. Sónia Talhe Azambuja will unravel this mystery that has intrigued Art Historians, based on the investigation of her recent book Plants, Animals and Landscape. From Iconography to Iconology in Painting in the 15th and 16th Centuries in Portugal (Lisbon: Scribe/ARTIS-IHA/CML, 2021).

Project "Oratorians in Ceylon"
A unique group of oratorian churches in Sri Lanka was identified and studied as part of a project to safeguard Portuguese-influenced heritage in the East.
