Passing of Professor Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão, Ph.D. (1925-2020)


It was with profound regret that ARTIS - Institute of Art History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon became aware of the death of Professor Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão, Ph.D. (1925-2020) on July 31st.

A historian of the highest caliber, he produced a vast reference historiographical work, in the national and international panorama. His distinguished teaching has marked generations of students at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.

To all his family, in particular to his children, Professor Adriana Veríssimo Serrão, PH.D., and Professor Vítor Serrão, Ph.D., our esteemed colleagues, the most heartfelt condolences.

With two options - Art History and Art, Heritage and Restoration - the Ph.D. in Art History is linked to the main research axes of ARTIS, providing students with a privileged space for research in the following areas:

  1. Late Gothic and Renaissance Art; 
  2. Collecting, Art Markets, and Decorative Arts;  
  3. Azulejo;
  4. Contemporary Art and Curatorship.

Students carrying out theses in the context of the strategic areas of ARTIS can also benefit from special support for the development of their studies.
