EXHIBITION | "AD GLORIAM DEI. HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE OF THE BROTHERHOODS OF MAFRA"

Opening 7 July, 2024 | Mafra, Real Edifício de Mafra > Galeria de Exposições da Câmara Municipal de Mafra | 9.30

The "AD GLORIAM DEI" exhibition aims to present the historical and artistic aspects of the brotherhoods of Mafra. It centres on the one that is not only the oldest but also the heir to all the others: the Royal and Venerable Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of the parish of Santo André of Mafra.

Part of the RVBBSM's artistic heritage, including sculptures, paintings, silver, metalwork, and textiles, is being presented to the public for the first time. While the public is familiar with part of the Brotherhood's extensive sculpture collection, particularly the "roca" figures used in the annual Lenten processions, the sculpture collection extends far beyond these images. The paintings are usually kept in the Brotherhood's Room, and the collections of decorative arts only appear in the context of liturgical celebrations. This exhibition allows for an appreciation of this heritage in a museographic context, which, while never losing sight of the functionality and primary purpose of these works as liturgical implements, offers the chance for closer observation and a broader appreciation by the public.
