Book launch "Guerra Junqueiro e os Couros Artísticos: As Cadeiras Lavradas e os Guadamecis da Fundação e da Casa-Museu" by Franklin Pereira, researcher at ARTIS-IHA.
May 25, 5pm, MNAA - National Ancient Art Museum
SYNOPSIS
«This study focuses on the most significant Collection of Portuguese Lavrado Leather Chairs, within the Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro and the Maria Isabel Guerra Junqueiro and Luís Pinto de Mesquita Carvalho Foundation. It is now possible to enjoy a book dedicated to the Encouradas Chairs of those estates, "iconic pieces of national furniture", by Franklin Pereira - the greatest researcher on the subject, in Portugal, and an internationally renowned specialist. Because they are seating furniture, they are objects that have been going unnoticed. Thus, this work gives visibility to a chapter in the History of Portuguese Art, always incomplete but absolutely peculiar, as there is no other country in which the carved chair is so striking.» Teresa d'Almeida d'Eça, Museum of Biscainhos, DRCN - Regional Directorate of Culture of the North
THE AUTHOR
Franklin Pereira (Porto, 1957) began working leather as a teenager, in a self-taught way. Later he had contact with other craftsmen, enriching his techniques; in the 1980s, an encounter with a shoemaker-tanner in the Azores gave rise to a process of investigation and inventory. The documentary study in national libraries and the collection in museums, together with the knowledge and learning with the last master engravers of the Portuguese tradition and the guadameci in Córdoba, led him to start a written production, spread in History and specialty journals, both in Portugal and in England, Norway, USA and New Zealand. The possibilities of traveling allowed contacts and learning with other lineages, both traditional and avant-garde. He received thirteen awards in the US in the 1990s at major art leather exhibitions. Among the books published, we can highlight "O couro lavrado no Museu Municipal de Viana do Castelo: da arte «mourisca» à época barroca"; "O couro lavrado no mobiliário artístico de Portugal", "As cadeiras em couro lavrado e os guadamecis do Museu de Pontevedra", "Ofícios do couro na Lisboa medieval" (with a preface by Cláudio Torres), "Um documento da Inquisição de Lisboa de 1610" (with a preface by Vitor Serrão), "De Córdoba para Portugal: el comercio de guadamecíes en el siglo XVI", and "Pele com Pele: Transfiguração & Transcendência / Skin with Skin: Transfiguration & Transcendence" (co-authored with Ana Caldas), the latter being the first volume published with works by two contemporary artists. Since 2016 he has been a researcher at Artis-Institute of Art History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. In 2017, he received the first Iberian award "Corium Dominus Magister", from the "Comisión de Fiestas Patronales del Cuero", in Spain, for his research, dissemination and transmission of knowledge.
