Os Mármores do Alentejo na Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima

(The Alentejo Marbles in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima)

As part of the PHIM project - Heritage and History of the Marble Industry, this virtual exhibition is dedicated to identifying the presence of Alentejo marbles in one of the best known Portuguese buildings on this and beyond its borders - the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Fátima. The initiative is an opportunity to share, with a more diversified audience, the results of the research work presented in July 2021 at the 7ICCH - Seventh International Congress on Construction History that took place in Lisbon.

From the vast set of buildings that make up the Sanctuary of Fátima, it was decided to start the study of the Basilica, including its colonnade, built between 1928 and 1954, not only because it is one of the oldest and most relevant buildings in the Sanctuary, but also because of its use of Marbles from the Estremoz Anticline that can be found there.

It is intended to make known this use, contributing to the knowledge of the history of the construction of the Basilica, through the study of its stone materials, thus valuing the Portuguese ornamental stones and, in particular, the marbles from the Alentejo, which they associate to its aesthetic qualities a 2000-year cultural history.
