Professor Hal Foster, a leading art historian and critic, will deliver a talk entitled "Modernism in a Non-Melancholic Key" on Februrary 15 th at 6 pm, at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (Amphitheatre I), as part of the ARTis Now.
Hal Foster is one of the most prominent art historians and critics. A Professor at Princeton University, where he teaches modern and contemporary art and theory, he is also the editor of October magazine and Zone Books. His vast bibliography published over the last 40 years includes landmark titles in recent art history: Recodings: Art, Spectacle, Cultural Politics, 1985; Compulsive Beauty, 1995; The Return of the Real, 1996; Design and Crime (and other diatribes), 2002; Prosthetic Gods, 2006; Bad New Days. Art, Criticism, Emergence, 2015, or more recently Brutal Aesthetics, 2020. Together with Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin Buchloh, David Joselit and Rosalind Krauss, he is the author of the famous art history Art Since 1900, 2016. His work started from a critical postmodernism to look at the revision of modernism and the avant-garde and analyze the displacement produced by their repetitions in the different historical orders up to the present.
