VII COLLOQUIUM ART COLLECTIONS IN PORTUGAL AND BRAZIL IN THE 19th AND 20th CENTURIES - Royal COLLECTIONS AND OFFICIAL COLLECTIONS
Cancelled

Important Notice

Due to the fact that the Covid 19 pandemic has not yet shown signs of being dominated worldwide, the organization of the VII Colloquium «Art Collections in Portugal and Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries» decided to cancel the event, which was scheduled to take place at the Ajuda National Palace-DGPC, in Lisbon, between October 21 and 24, 2020.
The holding of the meeting at a distance, digital media, was also considered, however it was not technically possible to ensure this possibility.
The postponement to 2021 is not possible, as the preparation for the VIII colloquium is already underway, but rather, in digital molds, preventing the need to be held at a distance.
Thus, the VII colloquium dedicated to the theme of Royal Collections and Official Collections will only count on the publication, in October 2020, of the texts of the approved communications.

ARTIS - Institute of Art History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, in partnership with the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts at the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Ajuda National Palace-DGPC, organized the VII Colloquium «Art Collections in Portugal and Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries» under the theme «Royal Collections and Official Collections», which will take place from October 21st to 24th, 2020, at the Ajuda National Palace, in Lisbon.

Many artists aspired to have members of the Royal Houses as commissioners or patrons. Examples of refined taste, their choices and options served as a reference for wealthy nobles and bourgeois, increasing the business of artistic production. As artisan workshops become modern commercial firms in an exquisite range of visual and decorative arts, having the privilege of serving a Royal House and achieving 'official supplier' status became a desired position. According to the market precepts, attractive catalogues were prepared, with careful descriptions and the suggestive power of the image is gradually integrated. Several agents are involved in the acquisition process, particularly when it took place abroad, with the Royal and Official Houses, in their respective diplomats, diligent and effective intermediaries. When acquisitions took place in the antiques market, the mechanisms were similar and the choices made were trends to follow.

The practice of royal collections ends up serving as a model for government collections (presidential, regional and municipal), which, in view of other temporalities, adopt particular profiles. Likewise, gifts among heads of state also generate official collections, allowing continuity of opportunities for other generations of artists, designers, dealers, galleries and workshops.

The memory of the profiles of the royal collections is guaranteed in national museums and in some palaces that have been musealized, serving as a reference for many other collectors and triggering a sharing with the public of certain tastes and artistic typologies, a question that remains similar in the official state collections . Many works and objects belonging to these collections are now available in museums without, however, being identified, making it difficult to understand their particularities and acquisition and incorporation strategies.

The VII Colloquium of Art in Portugal and Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the theme of the Royal and Official Collections, intends to address all this elaborate market process, the phenomena of taste, trend and influence created. The following aspects will also be considered, as an integral part of reflection and study:
  • Collections of the Royal / Official Houses and personal and institutional collections of monarchs, heads of state and other statesmen;
  • The end of monarchies and the destinations of royal collections - dispersions and accommodations;
  • Formation and development of State collections - public profiles and incorporations;
  • Official collections at embassies and consulates;
  • Musealization of real and official collections;
  • The real and official models of collecting and their reverberations in private collections.
