Modern Art and Art of the Church
23 to 28 of September 2019 | Capela do Rato, Lisboa
pub: 10 de julho de 2019
Taking the expressive title of the essay by Manuel Mendes Atanázio, Modern Art and Art of the Church, published 60 years ago and marking the 50th anniversary of the fulfillment of the Movement of Renewal of Religious Art, the Artis - Institute of Art History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon promotes an open course for the general public on this important topic.
If until the 20th century, Art had always had a privileged space within the Catholic Church, a great patron of artists and bold programs, many doubts and fears threatened, from the first decades of the 1900s, this timeless relationship.
It was, however, in fidelity to this ancient and fruitful dialogue that artists and religious people came together, confident in their renewal, fighting prejudices and false traditions. Pope Paul VI appealed to the artists - "Does the Church need you? (December 8, 1965) - and the artists responded, giving rise to some of the most beautiful works in the history of Modern Art and the Art of the Church of all time.
