Diana Gonçalves dos Santos
Diana Gonçalves dos Santos (1980) is an art historian specialized in the history of Portuguese art and a senior official at the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs of the Government of Azores (Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira island). She holds a PhD in Portuguese Art History (2014), a master?s degree in the same subject (2008), a specialization in Heritage Resources (2004) and a license degree in Art History (2003) from the University of Porto. Moreover, she was awarded a scholarship by the Foundation for Science and Technology that was instrumental for the consolidation of her technical and scientific skills in the field of Art History, as well as a research scholarship in a project devoted to the inventory of 18th- century Portuguese azulejos (2005) and a doctoral scholarship to support the development of her PhD thesis (2009-2012), entitled Azulejos made in Coimbra (1699-1801). Artisans and Artists. Chronology. Iconography. Alongside her academic training, she worked as a freelancer in the fields of museology, heritage conservation and cultural tourism, integrating different multidisciplinary teams. In 2015 she moved to the island of São Miguel, in Azores, to help create ARQUIPÉLAGO - Centre for Contemporary Art. She worked for the Centre during the installation period and the four subsequent years, coordinating the exhibition unit and curating the art collection.
Despite her dedication, throughout most of her academic career, to the study of azulejos - and particularly to the tile decorations produced in Coimbra in the 18th century - her research interests extend to other art forms.
She is the author of several publications, including articles in scientific journals, chapters in collective volumes and texts in exhibition catalogues. She has also spoken at various scientific conferences, taught professional courses in the field of Art History and curated art exhibitions.
She is an integrated researcher at ARTIS, the Art History Institute of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, since 2013.
